Carpet needs regular cleaning, just like rugs. You need to go over it with a vacuum cleaner 2-3 times a week, and when it gets dirty, do a general cleaning. For this purpose, 2 types of cleaning are used:
Unlike carpet, carpet is distinguished by the absence of an expressive pattern, thanks to which it can be used for flooring in any area, including stairs, corridors, and narrow spaces. This material is particularly durable due to its fairly dense structure - the pile is attached to the primary base, followed by a fixing layer and the last (secondary) base.
The carpet is characterized by increased wear resistance, making it ideal for covering any surface, including stairs
To properly decorate a staircase with carpet, you need to think in advance about what type of material is suitable and how to lay it correctly. To do this, you first need to decide whether the coating will be continuous or fragmented. In the first case, it will cover the entire staircase, in the second - only the surface of the tread.
Before laying, it is necessary to accurately determine the dimensions of the treads and risers
It is equally important to calculate the amount of carpet. It's quite easy to do this:
- Measurements are taken along the way from top to bottom.
- It is necessary to determine the dimensions of the treads and risers, calculate the area, and add 4 cm to each value.
- Then determine the coverage area for the upper and lower areas.
If necessary, the steps are pre-repaired and painted. Then, in the corners between the risers and treads, strips are nailed to fix the covering, directing the nails towards the corners. This can be a special L-shaped clamp or two ordinary strips, each of which should be 12 mm from the corner.
How to lay carpet on steps
The use of carpet on the steps of stairs not only gives them a solid look, but also guarantees increased comfort and safety when walking.
The soft pile of the carpet will keep your feet warm and allow you to go up and down even barefoot, without the risk of slipping. This is especially relevant and convenient in homes where there are small children. How to finish the steps of a staircase with carpet yourself and is it necessary to involve professional installers for this? Opinions differ, but one thing is certain - professional installation will save your time, and do-it-yourself installation will save money. What is more important specifically for you, decide individually, and we will look at the general principles and main stages of laying carpet on the stairs.
How to lay carpet on steps. Choice of coverage
First of all, you need to choose the right coating for installation on the stairs. If we are talking about the stairs of a private house, you can choose domestic or semi-commercial covering. For commercial buildings, only industrial carpet is suitable. It is advisable that it be marked “for stairs”, this ensures that the material will withstand heavy loads and its surface will slip minimally.
When choosing a carpet for free installation (without using glue), it is better to pay attention to a coating with a rubberized base. Such carpet will not move when walking and will not create inconvenience.
In addition, such a covering is easier to install, since it will fit tightly on the steps. You should not choose a carpet with too high a pile or a natural composition, since cleaning such a covering on the stairs can be difficult.
How to attach carpet to steps. Coating installation methods
Initially, you need to decide on the general appearance of the carpet on the stairs. A continuous carpet covering will require more material than laying a carpet runner in the center of the stairs. If the staircase has steps of different widths or depths (for example, a spiral staircase), then measurements should be taken on the largest step, then we will get a sufficient margin. For stairs with steps of the same size, a minimum of 4 cm of margin must be added to each depth for bends and joints.
According to the methods of fixation, carpet laying is divided into three types:
- Installation with glue
- Laying on rods
- Installation on mounting rails
Adhesive installation is considered very reliable. Typically used on wooden or concrete stairs. The base material must have good absorbency, otherwise the coating may not be fixed firmly enough. Let's look at how to glue carpet on steps step by step. To do this, the steps are cleaned, dusted and pre-primed. The carpet is cut to the size of the steps and laid step by step, rolling with a special roller for maximum fit to the step. Installation must begin from the top step, gradually moving down.
Laying on rods allows you to install the coating as a single piece. This method is only possible when laying a carpet path. The advantage is the ability to lay the material with some reserve and move the carpet, hiding local signs of wear. In addition, this coating can be quickly and effortlessly removed completely for cleaning or replacement. To attach the carpet to the stairs using this method, you need to purchase special metal rods with rings that press the carpet cloth in the recess of the steps.
Laying carpet on mounting slats is a more labor-intensive process that requires care and accurate calculations. Fixation of the coating is carried out in stages, with separate elements for each stage. Mounting strips are flat strips of wood or plywood with two rows of small nails that are attached to the inside corner of the step and to the riser. A felt carpet underlay is laid between the slats, which will provide a smooth surface and additional comfort during further use. The carpet is stretched over the slats, and its edges are folded into the gap between them. This method of fixing carpet to steps is as reliable and practical as possible, but can cause some difficulties if done independently.
If you doubt your ability to do the carpet installation yourself, we still recommend turning to professionals for help.

Which carpet is suitable for stairs?
Carpeting for stairs is made from artificial and natural materials, but combined options are considered the most suitable.
Let's look at the most common types of materials:
Needle-punched. It has the highest wear resistance and is used in high traffic areas. Easy to install and low cost.
Tufted (needle stitched). It is the most common, has low cost and good consumer characteristics. Widely used for private homes.
Woven. It has high durability and does not lose size during installation. It is produced in rolls, which makes it possible to cover stairs without joining seams.
Carpet selection
If you decide to decorate the stairs with carpet, you should know that not every type of carpet is suitable for this. Let's figure out what properties a material suitable for finishing should have:
- The carpet for the stairs must be made of reinforced and abrasion-resistant materials.
- It is not advisable to contain wool because wool will complicate the process of cleaning the coating from dirt.
- It is not advisable to have a thick lining; it will not allow the coating to exactly follow the contour of the steps and thus will not adhere well to them, due to which the quality will suffer.
- The carpet lining should not be slippery or flammable.
- It is recommended to use polypropylene fibers for coating; they have antistatic properties, are easy to clean and dry quickly.
Instructions for laying carpet on stairs
- Before you begin laying the carpet, you need to complete all the work associated with painting the bowstrings and railings, that is, sand them, apply a primer and varnish them.
- To prevent the staircase from creaking when walking on it, the treads and risers are additionally secured with screws. The holes are filled over the screw heads.
- Measure the length of the front edges of the steps.
- The edge-protecting profile, cut to length, is attached along the edge of the tread, having previously drilled and countersunk holes for screws.
- Having secured the profiles on all steps, use putty to smooth out the transitions between the treads and the surfaces of the profiles.
- Two or three strips of double-sided self-adhesive tape are glued onto each tread, to which strips cut from carpet are attached.
- In the same way, attach the covering to the risers and from below to the hanging ends of the treads.
- Finally, narrow strips of covering are glued to the flanges of the profiles covering the leading edges of the treads.

Preliminary work
Before starting work, unroll and lay out the carpet and leave it for at least a day.
Also, before starting cladding work, you should inspect the surface of the steps. Small irregularities do not need to be eliminated; they will not be noticeable under the coating. If the edges are very worn, it is better to restore them.
For wooden steps, use a plane, then extend the edges with wooden strips secured with screws. The edges of stone and concrete steps are restored using cement mortar. When it dries, additionally install metal corners.
The carpet is cut so that the fibers are parallel to the leading edge of the steps
Should I put underlayment under the carpet?
Finishing the stairs to the second floor
Today, there is an increasingly common opinion that it is not at all necessary to put a backing under the carpet: the coating is quite soft and independently hides the unevenness of the base. However, experts say the opposite: the underlay is an integral part of carpet installation, especially on stairs, where traffic is very high.
Here are the main arguments:
- -the backing protects against friction and increases the service life of the carpet by 2 times;
- — the substrate has shock-absorbing properties and takes on a significant part of the load;
- -the substrate increases sound and heat insulation.
The substrate is fixed with nails at sufficiently large intervals.
Carpet overlays on steps
To sheathe the steps in an original way, you can make overlays for each of them from carpet. Such details have the following advantages:
- when covering, this method is easy and simple;
- such overlays have an original appearance;
- you can use flooring of different tones;
- they prevent the steps from quickly deteriorating during use.
The overlays can be given any shape and color to suit the surrounding interior.

Rules for laying carpet on different types of stairs
Step-by-step assembly of a wooden staircase with your own hands
First, before starting the process of laying the coating on the reconnecting structure, we will provide basic general recommendations.
Note that when moving along a staircase, regardless of the direction, the load on the tread rollers acts in the downward direction, therefore, in order to reduce the deforming loads on the base of the flooring, the sheathing should be laid with fibers in the downward direction. The direction of the pile can be determined in a completely simple way: a lightweight hammer with a small handle, which is directed upward, falls from a short distance from the surface in the direction of the pile.
To estimate the required area of the required material, we start by measuring the width of the span. Since the width of the treads is most often not constant, it is worth measuring each one separately. With an open type of installation, we will add about 6 cm to the width for the purpose of later bending the edges of the fabric. Next, we measure the length of the ascending fold: from the top step to the bottom we lay the thread, observing the installation profile, and add 0.25 cm per unit step to take into account the thickness of the lining.
When purchasing cladding with a pattern, you need to make provisions for combining the pattern with the middle of the tread and with the pattern of the lining on the landing or in the hallway.
The number of linear meters of wide flooring is determined as follows: divide the length of the installation by the number of panels into which a standard carpet can be cut, taking into account the width of the roll. However, this is an approximation, since the joints should always be located in the corners between the treads and risers: the top end is laid at the rear edge of the step, and the bottom is cut at the bottom edge of the riser. In any case, for each type of coating, the calculation method is used exclusively.
Installation methods for laying can be somewhat different, depending largely on the design of the ascending structure itself and on the shape of the treads. It is simply impossible to cover an ascent with winder steps with a continuous covering from top to bottom. For this method, buildings with rectangular cross-section steps are suitable. Under other conditions, it will be necessary to cover the structure with separate patterns.
The continuous covering on straight spans can be secured using rods that press the path into the corner between the riser and the tread. The rods are secured with special rings and loops twisted into the material of the lifting mechanism with a distance of a couple of centimeters from the edge of the track. In this way, the laid path can be easily removed and periodically cleaned. Of course, they usually line the surface from wall to wall (for closed spans) or from a vertical surface to the racks (for open structures). It is allowed to lay a narrow path in the center of the ascending installation, and cover the opening side parts with varnish or decorate it at your discretion.
In many cases, the carpet is glued to the planes of staircases to avoid a sliding effect using contact adhesive, which is applied in a layer to the risers and treads with a brush or roller. The sticker is applied carefully and sequentially: starting from the top step, step by step. The flooring is applied to surfaces coated with glue with a slight smoothing. After this, it is removed, left for a while and finally applied. The exposure time depends on the characteristics of the glue used, which should be specified in the annotation attached to the product. Laying occurs by smoothing with a special device - a smoothing iron, in the direction from front to back or from top to bottom.
There is a trick that will help the flooring wear out more evenly: at the top step, wrap about a meter of material underneath, and after a year, release the tension from the raw material and move it slightly, having first unrolled it.
Covering a spiral staircase from the very top to the bottom landing, as well as from one end to the second edge, is somewhat more difficult, because you need to work with each tread separately. The clamping slats are adjusted using the same method as for right ascension, after which the slats are nailed to the ends of each step. When laying the material from top to bottom, separate pieces are cut off in turn for each fault, but do not forget to take into account the location of the pile; it is advisable to maintain one direction.
Finishing work
Work begins by nailing the slats with spikes. Then lay out a felt backing. It should be cut only after the step elements have been secured. The work is carried out starting from the top of the stairs. The underlay is secured with staples in stages on each riser and tread.
Stages of work:
Laying felt backing. This will make the base more even, the coating softer, and will also hide the already installed slats. It is secured not only with staples; you can also use adhesive tape for these purposes. It will ensure reliable fastening of the felt under the carpet.
Carpet laying
- It is necessary to securely fasten the carpet that goes around the steps. This will be ensured by the use of slats with spikes.
- To pull the carpet into the gaps formed between the slats, use a chisel. To ensure strong fastening of the nails to the back side of the covering, at the end of the work, knock with a chisel from top to bottom in those places where the slats pass.
- You need to stretch the carpet by pushing the edges into the gaps between the slats. This work is carried out using a special carpet knife with a sharp blade so as not to damage the material.
- Wedge-shaped cuts made in the folded edge will prevent the formation of bubbles. They should be the same size and evenly distributed.
- The carpet on the side of the wall should be adjusted to the corner line. This is done with a sharp knife. The pile should be pressed downwards. After this, you need to press the edge to the base. This work is carried out with a chisel.
- At the end of the work, the edge of the carpet is clamped using a special flight having a V-shaped profile. It is screwed to the floor and the end of the covering is tensioned using special spikes. They are placed in two rows, covered with a metal strip afterwards to make the work look neat.
Laying process on steps
There are a number of features for spiral staircases:
- Unlike conventional stairs, carpet cutting must be done in advance for each step. This is done because, as a rule, the inner and outer edges of the steps have different widths.
- Pieces of carpet are cut to a size slightly larger than the sum of the length of the tread and riser. And they fix it in the same way as a staircase with a straight flight.
Laying the coating on concrete can also be done using a special adhesive for working with carpet. Before starting work, it is worth preparing the surface by clearing it of debris and priming it. It is necessary to paste over the steps one by one, starting from the top step.
Stages of work:
- First, add a thinner to the glue, mix it and, using a spatula, apply it to the concrete over all surfaces of the step.
- Next, a strip of carpet is laid, which must be prepared in advance.
- We press and iron using a special spatula with a rubber tip.
- The work is carried out first on a horizontal, then on a vertical plane.
- After the material has set with the concrete, we cut off the excess part of the coating using a metal guide.
This type of installation is quite a long process. But if necessary, you can replace individual elements of the coating without removing the entire canvas.
Varieties
Depending on the type of fabric, the products are:
- Needle-stitched;
- Needle-punched;
- Fabric.
Needle-stitched or loop carpet, woven from a large number of strands in the form of loops. They can be left as they are or cut. When cut, the surface of the carpet becomes fleecy and more rigid.
Needle-punched carpet
The needle-punched material has a canvas-like backing. When making this type of carpet, the base fabric is pierced with needles, with the help of which the canvas is sheathed with thread yarn. The product is lint-free and easy to clean. At the same time, the material is inexpensive and has high wear resistance.
Woven products are a covering with a sheathed canvas base in which strands are additionally woven. This type of carpet has increased wear resistance. Such overlays for carpet steps, laid on the stairs, do not tighten during cutting and installation.
Features of the material
In the manufacture of the material from which the carpet on the stairs is made, natural and artificial fibers are used.
Types of carpet:
- Needle-punched. The basis of this option is the canvas. The fabric is pierced with needles into which thread yarn is pulled. This type does not have pile, but it is more wear-resistant and inexpensive.
- Needle stitching. This option is a mass of loops made from strands. This type of coating is also called loop coating. By cutting the loops, you get pile.
- Woven. This is when the pile threads intertwine with the warp threads. This type of carpet is mechanically durable and does not lose its dimensions during installation.
Selecting carpet
You can lay carpet on the stairs in any shape, thanks to its elasticity. There are some nuances when working with it:
- Material with a thick base or long pile is difficult to stretch on steps.
- It is not advisable to use fabrics with acrylic or wool fibers, because the carpet you choose should be easy to clean and dry quickly.
- Carpeting for stairs in a house is subject to wear and tear, so it is better to purchase reinforced material that contains synthetics.
- Its reverse side must be non-slip and fire resistant.
- Choose products whose outer surface has antistatic properties.
- Buy carpet based on rubber mastic for concrete stairs. This base will make the steps warmer.
- Choose coatings with a rubber base if you do not plan to use glue during installation.
Advantages of carpet:
- Soundproofing. The fleecy surface absorbs sound.
- Thermal insulation.
- Easy to install. This work is easy to do and does not require any special skills.
- Anti-slip coating that makes using the stairs safer.
- Protection of steps from damage.
- Suitable for installation on any surface - tiled, wooden, parquet and laminate, as well as concrete.
- Pleasant sensations when walking on it barefoot.
- A variety of shades allows you to choose a material for any interior, while making the house beautiful and cozy.
Methods for laying carpet
The choice of method for laying carpet on the steps directly depends on the type of staircase itself. A continuous covering (staircase structure, completely sheathed) looks presentable, but installation is quite problematic, and in the case of a screw one, it is impossible.
The following installation methods are distinguished:
- cutting out each element and fixing it with glue is long, tedious, and difficult to clean;
- laying like a track - the canvas is not cut, the corners are fixed with rods, easy to remove;
- Attaching the mats with double-sided tape is quite simple, but the fixation is not reliable.
Using rods
This is the most common method and is most often used if you need to fix a carpet on the stairs. As for the covering, it is spread on the steps with an equal distance from the edges, after which the canvas is pressed with special rods in the corners.
In the video: installation of a carpet holder on the steps.
Using fixing strips
This method is applicable only on straight stairs. To fix the carpet, you need special strips with so-called spikes. The slats are made of plywood - they can be of different lengths, depending on the width of the steps. Small nails are nailed onto the finished planks in two rows. See the photo below for what it looks like.
The finished studded parts are attached to the steps at the side ends. It’s good if the staircase is made of wood, then it will be easier to attach the planks with screws or nails. The parts are fixed to the concrete structure with dowel screws.
Glue method
Most often used for concrete stairs. The structure sheathed in this way is distinguished by its detailed design and attractive appearance. In this case, the carpet for each step is cut separately, since it is almost impossible to lay a single piece of carpet.
First of all, we measure the steps and cut the canvas, after which we treat the surface of the stairs with a primer composition (for concrete). After the primer has dried, apply the adhesive mixture and spread it over the entire area of the steps. All that remains is to lay the pieces of carpet and press them tightly for a while.
DIY carpet holders
You can also make carpet holders yourself. It won't take much time, and the finished result will look very aesthetically pleasing. The method is applicable for all types of stairs.
To make carpet holders with your own hands you will need:
- duralumin rods;
- clamps (can be purchased at a furniture store);
- fastening elements (screws, nails).
The installation itself is quite trivial. First, the covering is laid tightly without folds, then at each joint the carpet fabric is pressed with an aluminum rod, the latter is fixed on both sides in fixed rings.
A staircase is an integral attribute of a country house. To protect the steps from damage, to increase the wear resistance and service life of the structure, special overlays are used. The best option for this type of covering is carpet; it is inexpensive, provides a tight fit to the surface and absorbs excess noise.
When purchasing such a product, it is important to choose the appropriate mounting method; which one to choose is up to you
Pros and cons of finishing stairs with carpet
Finishing a staircase structure with carpet has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of this coating include:
- The elasticity and strength of the material, which protect the stairs from mechanical damage;
- Anti-slip texture;
- The coating can be cleaned using a conventional vacuum cleaner;
- Noise absorption. Even walking quickly and energetically on a staircase with carpet will create much less noise than walking on a structure without covering;
- Thermal insulation. This coating is especially relevant for concrete and stone stairs. Thanks to the carpet, you don’t feel cold from the material when walking up the steps;
- Easy to lay the material;
- High fire safety of the coating.
Also, most types of carpet are breathable coverings that do not impede air circulation. The material usually does not allow moisture to pass through it.
Example of a staircase with carpet
The disadvantages of carpeting on stairs include:
- Rapid contamination of the material;
- The fragility of the carpet with active use of the stairs;
- Difficulty removing stains from the surface of the product.
Coating prices may vary significantly depending on the composition of the material. Therefore, this factor can relate to both advantages and disadvantages. The cheapest are products made of polyester and acrylic. However, such a carpet will last about 5-6 years with active use. More wear-resistant and expensive are materials based on terklon, nylon and suprim. The most durable and resistant to color fading is nylon carpet.
Carpet calculation
- Measurement starts from the top, and all treads and risers are summed up. It is recommended to add 4 cm to each step.
- Screws are measured along the outer edge. The width of the covering should correspond to the widest step at the turn.
- If the stairs are open on one side, add another 4 cm to the width of the covering at its hem.
To calculate the material, use the following method, which works even in the most difficult cases.
Take measurements from the largest step and multiply the resulting value by their total number. Such a calculation already includes allowances for waste that may be generated when cutting carpet.
The carpet is cut in such a way that the fibers are parallel to the leading edge of the steps.
Laying methods
Carpet can be laid as a path, set back from both edges of the stairs, without recessed risers. This is the simplest method of installation, when a straight flight of stairs is covered with a whole panel and secured at the corners of the steps with rods specially provided for this purpose. The rods themselves are attached to special rings. As you know, the coating wears out most quickly on the rounded edges of the treads. With this installation method, by moving the coating, wear can be evenly distributed. In addition, the carpet is easy to remove for cleaning.
Solid steps look much more beautiful, however, they are more difficult to lay.
The cutting of product elements is carried out for each step separately. The work is greatly simplified by using templates. It is cut out along the fold lines from thick paper. In this case, the cutting will be more accurate and the need for adjustment will be reduced.
The flooring is laid by smoothly connecting the elements to each other. The most convenient joining of carpet is on adhesive canvas. This method allows you to quickly replace the old coating with a new one. You can connect one part to another using glue or fixing strips that have jagged edges.
If the covering is very springy when folded, it is recommended to use a stapler.
Technology for laying carpet on stairs using fixing strips
If necessary, the steps are pre-repaired and painted. Then, in the corners between the risers and treads, strips are nailed to fix the covering, directing the nails towards the corners. This can be a special L-shaped clamp or two ordinary strips, each of which should be 12 mm from the corner.
The planks for the platform are cut to length with a special hacksaw - a reward and fixed in the same way as laying the covering indoors. Before proceeding directly to laying the carpet, the fixing strips for the stairs must be completely installed.
The backing is cut out according to the width of the carpet and the length of the narrow section with an allowance for the length of 25 mm. The material is placed on the upper tread, and it should fall through the roller. Then they secure it on three sides, the back and side edges, with nails or staples. Do the same with all treads.
The carpet from the upper platform is cut with a carpet knife. The top of the riser should remain covered. Place the material on the fixing bar and cut off the excess.
Align the edges of the material on the bottom step and the top tread, then place its end on the teeth of the clamp and secure it using a scarpel and a mallet. This process looks like this in more detail: starting from one corner, using a scarpel, the material is placed on the teeth of the strip, gradually moving in the opposite direction. For better fixation, tap the scarpel with a rubber mallet. During the fastening process, the canvas is unrolled at the next stage.
The carpet must be leveled at each step. If necessary, the roll is moved. When completing the span, excess covering is cut off. Excess pieces are also cut off on the upper step.
Overlays for steps
It is not necessary to cover the steps completely. It will be quite enough, for example, to lay small rounded rugs of suitable size on them, positioned in the middle. This is much easier than installing carpet steps. Such overlays look very aesthetically pleasing. They are hemmed along the edges, and the additional thickening obtained in these areas makes them more decorative. In addition, you can choose the color scheme of the rug. In addition to being aesthetic, carpet stair overlays also perform a protective function: they reduce wear on the steps, especially the most dangerous leading edges.
How to cover a staircase with carpet
Laying carpet on stairs is not a complicated process. However, the quality and durability of the result directly depends on the correctness of its implementation. All work consists of several successive stages:
- Carrying out calculations of the required amount of material and its cutting.
- Carrying out staircase cladding using prepared material and tools.
Immediately before starting work, you need to prepare the structure itself for finishing, as well as collect all the necessary tools.
Calculation and cutting
Only properly finished staircases can decorate the structure and the entire room. Therefore, it is very important to make accurate measurements of the material and its cutting.
The principle of measuring the required square footage of the material is carried out depending on the type of staircase:
- For marching structures, the length of all risers and treads is measured. The resulting numbers are summed up, and another 10% margin is added to the result. The width of the covering should correspond to the width of the steps + 4-6 cm of margin;
- The length of the steps of the spiral staircase is measured on the outside of the structure. In this case, the required width of the coating is determined by the size of the largest step;
- To finish open staircases, measurements of the width and length of the treads are carried out separately for each step. In this case, it is necessary to add 4-5 cm of reserve to the results obtained for each stage. Such a reserve is needed to be able to carefully tuck the material during installation.
For any type of structure, measurements are taken from the top step to the riser of the bottom step.
Cutting the material for covering the steps on an open staircase is carried out before installation. In this case, separate pieces are cut out of solid material for each tread, taking into account the mandatory margin for hems. For closed stairs, excess material is cut off during installation. In this case, it is necessary to cut the material from the middle. In this case, the seam will be more even.
Materials and tools
In addition to the carpet itself, the main tools and materials needed for the job include:
- Studded slats;
- Nails;
- Felt backing;
- Knife for cutting coating;
- Folding ruler;
- Bit;
- Mallet;
- Staple hammer.
To finish a staircase with carpet, don’t forget a knife.
When decorating a concrete staircase with carpet with your own hands, you may need an impact drill and dowel-nails.
Preparation of material and stairs
Before installing the carpet on the stairs, the structure and the material to be laid must be prepared:
- A day before the start of finishing work, the carpet must be brought into the room and laid out. This is necessary for the material to take its natural shape.
- The temperature in the workroom should not be less than 150C. Otherwise, the fabric may show little flexibility, and after installation under normal temperature conditions the material will straighten out and become covered with folds.
- If there are any unevenness on the stairs, they must be leveled using putty a few days before starting work.
- The staircase structure is thoroughly cleaned the day before work and treated with a suitable primer.
Immediately before installation, the stairs must be re-cleaned of dust and debris.
Sheathing
Covering a structure with carpet can be done in several ways:
- On the fixing strips. In the corners between the tread and the riser, thin strips with many small nails are mounted. The distance of each plank from the corner should be about 1.2 cm. The points of the nails must be directed towards the corners of the steps. The felt backing is cut to the size of the steps. It fits on the slats. And on top of it, pieces of carpet are mounted. During the covering process, the felt and the carpet itself are placed on the nails of the fixing strips. The fabric is pressed in the corners with a chisel, and if necessary, additionally tapped with a mallet. On the sides the product is tightly fixed with nails or a construction stapler.
- Using rods. In this way, carpet is attached mainly to the steps of straight flights of stairs with non-recessed risers. At the same time, the coating is easy to remove and clean. The material is laid out from top to bottom along the entire staircase, always bending according to the geometry of the steps. At the transition points between the riser and the tread, special rods are installed that lightly press the material, holding it in the designated place. With this type of installation, the width of the carpet should be less than the width of the steps.
- Placement of material on glue. To do this, the material is cut in the form of segments for each step. A special adhesive mixture is applied to each step separately, and only after installing the material on the previous surface. The glue is applied to the tread and riser along the entire width and length using a brush or spatula. Afterwards you need to wait about 5-10 minutes and lay a piece of carpet on the adhesive mixture. The material must be smoothed, preventing the formation of air bubbles underneath it. Additionally, each segment can be secured at the edges with nails. The advantage of this installation method is the possibility of partially replacing the coating in the future.
On wooden stairs, the carpet is fixed at the edges of the steps in a stretched manner using a construction stapler. Fixation is done every 4-5 cm. When laying material with a pattern, it is important to ensure that all its elements are symmetrical. When finishing with a single-color carpet, it is necessary to take into account the direction of the pile of each piece being laid.
After completing the installation of the coating, it is advisable not to use the stairs for 1-1.5 days.
Type of stairs in a private house
The variety of types of stairs for a private home excites the imagination. These are straight, strict design geometry, screw and spiral, as well as combined stairs. The most popular staircases in a private home include: • marching • spiral • staircases on rails.
The noticeable popularity of marching stairs is due to the simplicity and accessibility of the design, providing maximum comfort during descent and ascent, as well as the materials used. Concrete, wooden or combined stairs have served the owners of country houses for decades, especially if the steps can be finished using tiles, stone or porcelain stoneware.
The only condition for creating marching stairs is the presence of free space of at least 3 square meters. However, the introduction of turning flights with intermediate platforms, stylishly lined with wood or carpet, allows you to save a small area.
Spiral staircases are used, on the contrary, under the condition of maximum space saving or in places where it is impossible to arrange a simple staircase. Aesthetically, spiral staircases look stylish and impressive, especially if the stairs are decorated with glass, wood and tiles. The steps of a spiral staircase, decorated with square, triangular or polygonal steps, not only compensate for the occupied space, but are also exclusive design solutions.
The solid and reliable design of staircases on bolts, which uses metal elements to create the frame and handrails, as well as steps, makes it clear that the staircase can withstand significant weight. Therefore, finishing stairs with wood or laminate looks attractive, especially twisted handrails made of shiny metal.
The question naturally arises about what materials are preferable to use when finishing staircase steps or elements.

How to correctly calculate the amount of carpet
If you are going to sheath a turning staircase, use the outside edge to measure. To determine the width, measure the widest step at the turn.
For an open staircase, add an additional 4 cm to the width of the steps to roll up the covering.
IMPORTANT: The flight of stairs must be covered with carpet from the top landing to the bottom riser. What tools and additional materials will be needed for the work:
What tools and additional materials will be needed for the work:
- — slats with spikes;
- — backing (preferably felt);
- - wooden planks;
- - metal corners;
- - adhesive tape;
- - screws and nails;
- - carpet knife;
- - hammer.
Features of finishing steps with carpet
Unlike standard coverings, carpet is distinguished by the lack of expressiveness of the pattern, due to which it can be used for flooring in all areas, including corridors, stairs and narrow spaces. This material is incredibly durable due to its dense structure - the pile is attached to the primary base, followed by a fixing layer and a secondary base.
It is equally important to calculate the amount of material, and this is quite simple to do:
- Measurements are taken from top to bottom.
- It is necessary to determine the dimensions of risers and treads, calculate the area, and add 4 cm to all values.
- Next, determine the coverage area for the lower and upper landings.
Helpful advice! It is necessary to buy carpet with a reserve, since minor errors in work are almost inevitable.
The most practical option is polypropylene or nylon carpet. It is easy to clean and does not electrify.
Finishing a concrete staircase in a private house, popular types of cladding
The concrete solution has dried and the staircase is ready for use, but its appearance is considered unfinished and therefore needs finishing. Unlike, which have the right to exist without any decor, every owner wants the internal stairs to be chic.
Today the following lining of concrete steps is popular:
- Tree;
- Marble tiles;
- Laminate;
- Porcelain tiles;
- Carpet.
When cladding a flight of stairs, it is important to take into account the finishing of the floors on the floors. Tiles do not combine with wood, nor do laminate and carpet.
When finishing steps, you need to take into account manufacturing. The modern building materials market provides a large selection of concrete. Made from wrought iron or wood, glass or aluminum, they will add a touch of personality and variety to a boring staircase.
Criterias of choice
In order for the material laid on the steps to serve for a long time, among all the variety of products you should choose carpet that is marked “for stairs.” Such coatings have increased wear resistance
Also, when planning to decorate the stairs with this material, you should pay attention to the appearance of the product. The coating should fit harmoniously into the interior of the room, but not merge with the floor and walls
However, first of all, when selecting carpet, attention should be paid to the composition of the material. Despite the natural nature of wool fibers, materials containing them should be discarded
There are several reasons for this:
- Wool easily collects dirt and debris. Such a coating will get dirty often and quickly;
- Due to their structure, wool fibers are difficult to clean;
- Products quickly lose their aesthetic appearance and become worn;
- Wool is a strong allergen. And in combination with the debris that accumulates in it, the coating can significantly worsen the well-being of people prone to allergies.
When choosing carpet for the stairs, do not forget that the covering should fit harmoniously into the interior.
Also, when choosing a covering, it is important to consider the following factors:
- Carpet with a long pile and a thick insulating base has little stretch. It will be difficult to lay it on the steps;
- The reverse side of the coating must be made of rubber or other material that is not subject to rapid ignition and burning;
- The underside of the material should not be smooth and slippery;
- The material should be easy to clean and dry quickly;
- The product must not create a static charge during use.
The most convenient and practical are coatings with polyamide and polypropylene fibers.
Preparation for finishing
Finishing the staircase with carpet with your own hands should be done after putting it in order, checking the stability and evenness of the steps. If the structure is made of wood, this will be a good time to eliminate the creaking that may appear when moving up the steps.
The technology of finishing a concrete screw model with carpet requires first eliminating any existing protrusions or chips.
Wherein:
- Very small irregularities on the steps do not need to be eliminated; the two-layer covering of the stairs with carpet makes them completely invisible. Heavily worn edges of treads need to be restored along the planes;
- Damaged edges of stone or concrete steps are leveled with cement mortar, which, after drying, is strengthened with metal corners;
- The worn and badly worn edges of wooden steps can be corrected with a plane, and then extended with wooden strips, screwing them with countersunk screws.
A few recommendations when carrying out preparatory work:
- 24 hours before starting work, the carpet must be laid out so that it straightens;
- The room temperature should not be lower than 15°;
- The stairs should be vacuumed in advance and the concrete surfaces should be painted.
Calculation of the required amount of carpet
Taking structural measurements
Before covering the stairs with carpet, you should correctly calculate the amount of carpet for finishing a specific model.
For this:
- Starting from the upper platform, the dimensions of all existing risers and treads are summed up, adding 40 mm to each step;
- When cutting carpet for a turning staircase, its outer edge is measured, and the widest step placed at the turning determines the width of the floor covering;
- With one side of the structure open, the carpet is cut to the size of the stair step, with an allowance of 40 mm for turning the edge;
Dimensions for cutting material
The material for covering the upper platform up to the first riser is taken into account.
To decorate spiral staircases, you must consider:
- Carpet cutting is carried out in fragments, which are cut separately for each step individually. This is because the dimensions of the steps are usually different;
- The material is cut into pieces, their sizes are slightly larger than the total size of the riser and tread. The carpet is attached in the same way as on a straight structure.
When finishing stairs of any design, it is recommended not to cover them with a continuous sheet, but to use separate elements. This solution will be more economical in operation - it becomes possible to quickly replace individual damaged or worn parts, rather than the entire coating.
During repairs, the defective material is removed from the studs, and then a new one is installed on them. In this way, even the entire coating can be gradually replaced without great expense or effort.

Choosing an interesting finish
Let's say right away that carpet, being an elastic material, can completely take on all the shapes of a flight of stairs. Therefore, on the one hand, working with it is quite simple, but on the other hand, it also has its own subtleties of installation, without which there will be no trace of beauty and functionality (see also the article Beautiful stairs - a review of wooden and forged creations).
Why carpet
The material has many interesting advantages, but we are interested in the following:
- Protection of stairs from mechanical wear . Despite its external lightness, good material is ready to serve as protection for staircase coverings for many years.
- Soundproofing. This type of flooring is always capable of absorbing and dissipating sound due to the presence of fibers in the body.
- Thermal insulation . This indicator is never superfluous, and again, due to the structural structure, the product has low thermal conductivity, which allows us to feel comfortable at any time of the year on elastic steps.
- Easy to use . And indeed, as we have yet to see, it is easy to install carpet on the stairs, and this can be done even without special knowledge.
Where to begin
Naturally, the first thing we need to do is determine the dimensions of the staircase structure. The width is clear, in principle, as is the steps and length.
If both planes are equal, that is, the front side and the surface, we simply count them and multiply them by the number of steps. Using the same principle, we calculate the length if the height and width of the step are different.
Beautiful staircases - an overview of wooden and forged creations
Advice! When choosing carpet, special attention should be paid to the quality of the material and its wear resistance. Do not forget that the product will be located on a flight of stairs, and this is one of the most “passable” places in any home. And after we have calculated the size of the staircase that will be upholstered, we add another 10% to it, this is, as always, our margin of safety, and then we buy carpet for the stairs.
Is there a difference between the regular material and what we are going to use for the steps? Of course, it’s all about strength and thickness, and for our version we will definitely need a more durable product.
Preparation
Before covering the stairs with carpet, we need to carry out certain preparatory work. We assess the condition of the steps (
Materials for finishing and cladding stairs
The main materials used for finishing and cladding stairs can unmistakably be called wood, stone, tile. Available finishing of stairs photo, finishing will allow you to do it according to the desired model and taking into account the recommended materials.
Wood The most revered and high-quality material for finishing stairs in a private house has been and remains wood. The main characteristics of wooden materials are the natural strength of wood, ease of processing and installation and, of course, original appearance.
Once you see the ornate pattern of wooden balusters of stairs, or sit on wooden steps, you can fall in love with this irreplaceable finishing material. Unless, of course, the price of natural wood and products made from it is scary. Of course, any wood used for finishing stairs - ash, oak or beech - creates a unique design.
Decorating stairs with wood, depending on the type of staircase, of course, is done entirely or with wood elements. For example, fences or steps can be lined with wood.
Finishing a metal staircase entirely with wood will change the look of the structure to a wooden staircase. And steps stylized as wood are a suitable option, because the appearance of such steps goes well with any interior of the room. A common option are steps made of porcelain stoneware, the stones of which imitate valuable wood species.
Standard steps measuring 325x1200 mm, as well as the installation of side skirting boards and staircase landings, are matched to wood based on color and texture. An attractive option would be to paint a staircase with wooden steps on rails and a metal string.
Stone and tile
The abundance of stone-like facing materials for finishing stairs is not limited to these materials: • porcelain tiles • clinker • tiles.
Excellent strength characteristics can be provided by artificial stone and tiles. There is no doubt that cladding stairs with natural stone attracts not only its presentable appearance, but also the prospect of long-term operational life. But there are certain arguments that can radically change the planned cladding plans. This is the high cost of the material and the need for a team of finishers who, in a few days, can build and veneer the staircase structure of a private house.
The cladding is carried out using the same technology for stone or tiles. The only additional task will be cutting ceramic tiles, which will entail significant costs. A popular option for finishing stairs with tiles is the cladding of stairs made of porcelain tiles with capinos. When coated, these steps look impressive and practically do not slip due to the presence of a special coating. Caring for steps made of stone and tiles is simple and convenient, which is especially noticeable in areas of significant daily traffic.
However, it is not necessary to clad stairs with stone or tiles. In some cases, preference may be given to finishing the stairs with carpet or laminate. Such elastic materials do not require additional special cutting; the material is laid immediately.
Carpet and laminate are fastened with plastic skirting boards or brass rods fixed with clamps in the treads. Sometimes metal rods are used.
Having formulated for yourself a modern concept for cladding the stairs of a private house and choosing the appropriate material, hurry to bring your grandiose plans to life. Kapinos Desert cream will help!
Features of concrete stairs
Before finishing work, it is worth assessing the quality of the stairs. The material must be laid on leveled steps. If you use a plaster or putty mixture for this type of work, this can lead to a delay in the entire process. It is best to use high-strength concrete mixtures, using additional reinforcement.
A common mistake encountered with such stairs is a large difference between the risers. The deviation from the accepted height must be at least 9.5 mm. To ensure this criterion, formwork made of moisture-resistant plywood is used.
It is important to understand that pouring concrete on a staircase is not a cheap job, but finishing it with wood, especially valuable species, will cost even more. When finishing the stairs it is important:
When finishing the stairs it is important:
- Do not attach the solid wood to the step so that the finishing does not fall off.
- When choosing a finishing material, use boards with a thickness of more than 3 cm.
- It is best to choose a paint that will not hide the wood grain.
- Before starting work, the concrete base of the stairs should be cleared of debris and dust. This will ensure good adhesion to the glue.
- When attaching plywood, not only glue is used, but also dowels as additional fastening.
- Moisture-resistant varnish must be of good quality and coated with at least three layers. Before applying the next one, you must allow the previous layer to dry.
You can also do the restoration yourself, but this process will take a lot of time, because before starting finishing work, the steps need to be leveled.
Carpet on the stairs, selecting tools and materials
For orderly and correct installation work on laying carpet on the stairs, we will immediately determine the list of tools that will not only be needed on occasion, but will be extremely necessary. Of course, this is a hammer and an openwork saw, a roller chisel and a stapler with staples, scissors and a retractable construction knife. Clamping strips are also needed that will hold the deck tightly so that there is no sliding effect when lifting and descending from the structure.
Of course, we will purchase the coating itself. When considering a wide range of materials, we will be guided by such a criterion as its cost, since the mechanism in question is a place with considerable traffic, and we are not eager to work on changing the flooring every couple of months
Carpeting will certainly wear out quite quickly, and therefore we will pay special attention to its quality
We do not recommend selecting raw materials with a low fiber density; we note that they are very, very not durable, and are subject to destruction primarily on the tread rollers. Despite the acceptable long service life promised by the manufacturer, flooring on a foam base is not suitable either. It is somewhat more practical to lay a dense carpet on the ascending structure, which is made in production on a woven fabric base, or jacquard material.
When purchasing stair coverings, a certain number of requirements are put forward for the lining, which must have wear-resistant qualities. In conditions of increased cross-country ability, as well as special conditions, we recommend purchasing raw materials with the most ordinary rubber lining with a relief reminiscent of a waffle. We advise you not to give up carpet on a felt base.
Rules for caring for stairs with carpet
Carpet needs regular cleaning, just like rugs. You need to go over it with a vacuum cleaner 2-3 times a week, and when it gets dirty, do a general cleaning. For this purpose, 2 types of cleaning are used:
- Dry – powders (dust absorbents) are used.
- Wet - with special shampoos for carpets.
The products are used according to the attached instructions. Using a special shampoo involves applying the formed foam and distributing it with a brush. After drying, the carpet is vacuumed.
Removable cover finish
The finishing can also be done in such a way that the coating remains removable . True, this option is only suitable for straight stairs.
Fastening is carried out in the same way as described above - first, measurements are taken, then the carpet is laid, starting from the top. But the fastening is done in the corners of the steps using special rods.
This method will provide the ability to remove the coating for cleaning or ventilation in the fresh air. True, most often this option is used when working with wide-span parade marches.
Carpet calculation
Proper carpet measurement will help not only to eliminate overspending, but also a shortage of material . Calculation principles:
- Start measuring from the top step. Each tread and riser should be measured, adding 4 centimeters to them, and the resulting figures should be summed up.
- When calculating the material for a spiral-type staircase, measure along the outer edge. And as the width parameter, select the size of the widest step.
- If the structure is open, then add another 4 centimeters to the width in order to be able to tuck it.
- The calculation is carried out from the top platform to the riser of the first stage.
Types of carpet for stairs
Today, various carpet coverings are produced. They differ in production technology, weaving and other characteristics. From the point of view of consumer properties, the material from which the carpet is made is of greatest importance:
- Wool – it can be partially or completely natural (in this case it will be more expensive). It is highly durable, easily painted in different colors, and lasts a very long time, especially if it contains artificial components (for example, 20% nylon). The disadvantage is the rather high price.
- Nylon is an artificial fiber based on polyamide. When finished, they are not painted, they are quite durable, but they get dirty easily. Moreover, such carpet options are affordable.
- Polypropylene is another man-made polymer that costs even less. However, it is not durable - the fibers wear out quickly, after which the coating can only be thrown away. Easy to maintain - easy to clean from any dirt.
- Polyester is also easy to wash, affordable, but wears out quickly.
Thus, it is best to choose natural carpeting, and it does not have to be 100% wool - 80% is enough. A staircase covered with natural carpet looks quite attractive in photos and in real life.
Wool is pleasant to the touch, thanks to which it creates a cozy atmosphere in the home
Material selection
Carpet for stairs
The carpet has good elasticity, which allows it to be laid on a span of any shape . But there are certain subtleties when working with it. On the modern building materials market, there is a special carpet used for stairs. It differs in technical characteristics - the presence of a special pile that is difficult to erase with constant use, and a more durable base. If it is necessary to lay carpet without sizing, use a material that has a rubber base. For finishing concrete stairs, carpet based on rubber mastic is best suited . It will help correct the lack of cold steps, making them warm.
Advantages of carpet for finishing stairs:
- Soundproofing. Due to its fleecy structure, this coating will absorb sound.
- Thermal insulation. This criterion is especially important for concrete stairs, where the steps can be quite cold.
- Easy to install. No special construction skills are required to carry out the work.
- Anti-slip coating. The operation of the ladder will be safer.
- Aesthetic appeal. Possibility to decorate the room depending on the chosen style.
- Protection of steps from mechanical damage. The right material will not only protect the staircase structure, but will also retain its appearance for a long time.
- It can be laid on any surface - wood, tile, laminate or parquet, and even concrete.
Types of carpets
Carpet is produced using different technologies and on different bases. Both natural and synthetic fibers are used for its production.
Carpets made of any material have a structural structure consisting of three levels: the pile itself, the base - the primary lining and the securing layer - the secondary lining. In order to understand which of the materials presented in retail chains is best suited for staircase overlays, it makes sense to consider their features in more detail.
Differences in manufacturing technology
According to manufacturing technology, carpet can be needle-stitched (tufted), needle-punched or woven.
Illustration | Features of manufacturing technology |
The woven method of making carpet is similar to the production of conventional carpets. This type of flooring is the most durable and most expensive. It is quite easy to identify this material by looking at its base, which resembles the underside of a fabric.
Tufted or needle-stitched carpet has quite high strength, as it is made by stitching the base with pile fiber. The result is a looped carpet, and the high loops can be trimmed later. The base for stitching can be woven or non-woven, and the pile fibers can be natural or artificial.
The needle-punched version of carpet is considered wear-resistant. When making it, the threads are laid on the primary base, after which they are driven into it, and on the wrong side they are secured with a secondary layer - latex, rubber or glue, onto which the felt is fixed. This coating is lint-free. |
Differences in carpet backing material
An important factor in choosing a carpet is its base. The comfort of using the coating, its durability, as well as the convenience and reliability of installing overlays on stair steps depends on it. To avoid problems in the future, it is necessary to consider the characteristics of this part of the carpeting.
The production of carpet begins with the primary base, on which the pile is fixed in one of the ways. At this stage, the threads are not yet firmly fixed to the base, so they are additionally fixed by applying a secondary base. Carpet laid on stairs is subject to quite a high load, so to securely secure the threads, an adhesive composition that includes foamed latex is used. Thanks to this material, the carpet becomes elastic to the required degree and acquires resistance to sliding on the surface, does not shrink or deform.
The primary base may be non-woven or woven. The non-woven base does not have sufficient ductility, so it is not suitable if you plan to bend the material from the tread to the riser. It will have to be secured with fragments cut to size separately for each plane. The woven version is more flexible and easier to install on steps.
Carpet is made on jute, rubber, textile, foam and felt base. To know which one is better suited for the stairs, you should take a closer look at their features:
Illustration | Features of the carpet base |
Jute is a natural, environmentally friendly material and is used to produce wool, viscose and linen carpets. However, it has a number of disadvantages - rapid abrasion, low moisture resistance, which results in the appearance of mold and the development of putrefactive processes. Therefore, jute-based carpet cannot be wet cleaned.
The man-made version of jute is synthetic fibers. The base of them is moderately moisture-resistant, wear-resistant, and does not shrink, but frequent manual wet cleaning, as well as the use of a washing vacuum cleaner, are harmful to it. Carpet on such a base is quite rigid, and it is very difficult to bend and glue it in this position. Therefore, if you plan to cover not only the treads, but also the risers with material, you will have to cut it.
The rubber or rubberized base consists of waterproof rubber glue or nylon. The top pile layer is most often made using the needle-punched method. Rubber-backed carpet is positioned as a waterproof, elastic and durable material that is used in areas with high traffic volumes. However, in reality there are nuances that you need to be aware of. The water resistance of the material is observed only during the first time of operation, then water seeps under the coating during wet cleaning and is retained under it. As a result, an environment is created that is favorable for the occurrence of fungus or rotting of the base on which the carpet is laid. Over time, the rubber layer decomposes, which turns into black dust that enters the environment. You can get rid of it only by completely dismantling the coating. It is not recommended to use such material for actively used stairs.
Natural felt today is rarely used to create a carpet base, as it has a number of negative qualities - it is difficult to maintain, the product is heavy, and it is not resistant to moisture. When it gets into the structure of the material, it takes a long time to dry, which helps create a favorable environment for mold. However, this material also has its advantages - it is flexible, adheres well to the surface and perfectly muffles the sound of steps on the steps.
Synthetic felt is an alternative to a natural base and has good characteristics: sound insulation, ease of installation and maintenance - the carpet can be wet cleaned. For stairs, a material with a thin synthetic felt base with low pile is very suitable.
Textile-based carpet, which can be jute or wool combined with nylon, is a flexible and lightweight material. Such coatings are positioned as a commercial option, although they are not durable and wear-resistant. Therefore, to improve these characteristics, “super-comfort” and “ultratex” bases, which combine the best properties of a foam base and jute, have recently been increasingly used. For stair coverings or overlays, it is best to choose the latest covering options.
Latex foam-based carpet has excellent sound-absorbing characteristics, strength and flexibility. The material adheres well to the surface and is held on it with double-sided tape; it can be subjected to both dry and wet cleaning. The disadvantage of this carpet is its short service life - only about six years. Over time, the base begins to crumble as the latex loses its elasticity, and because of this, clearly visible dents form in the coating. |
Pile layer material
As mentioned above, natural or synthetic fibers are used to make carpet.
Natural carpets are made from raw materials of plant and animal origin. Wood fibers, cotton, flax, etc. are used as plant raw materials, and silk or wool are used as materials of animal origin.
Synthetic fibers are made from polyamide, polypropylene, acrylic or polyester. Artificial materials are also made with partial use of mineral or plant raw materials.
Sheep wool carpet.
- Wool covers are traditionally made from sheep's wool. The advantages of this material include its high density, wear resistance, durability - the service life of the coating is 35-40 years, fire safety - wool does not burn, but smolders, environmental friendliness - it does not contain toxic substances. The disadvantages of woolen coverings include their high cost and instability to moisture (dry cleaning with a vacuum cleaner is recommended). Wool accumulates dust well, so it is not recommended for rooms where people with a predisposition to allergic reactions live. In addition, wool is a favorite “dish” for moths.
Combined floor coverings made of flax and jute or sisal.
- Linen coverings are produced in a combined version with jute or sisal twine. Linen has been widely used to create fabrics and carpets, dating back to the ancient Egyptian civilization to the present day. The material is in great demand due to its unique bactericidal and thermal insulation qualities, as well as the strength of the fibers. Linen is used in the decorative art of different eras in its own way, but it has always been used to make rugs and then floor coverings. Flax fibers do not absorb moisture, so carpets made from it can be wet cleaned.
Sisal flooring.
- Sisal is no less unique material than flax. Its fibers are produced from the leaves of Agava sisolana, which is why the plant itself is often called sisal. Sisal coating is made on a synthetic latex base, which makes it dust-proof, creates a tight fit of the material to the surface, and also increases the service life of the product. The advantages of this coating include the following characteristics:
— environmental cleanliness;
— hypoallergenic, which expands the scope of application of the material;
— originality of textured weaving;
— lack of static electricity, due to which the coating does not attract dust and small debris;
- resistance to abrasion;
- strength;
- easy to clean with a vacuum cleaner;
— ease of installation on any surface.
A negative characteristic of the coating is its intolerance to moisture, since agave fibers absorb water well, which is why they increase in volume, weakening the structure of the coating. And subsequently, mold may well appear.
Viscose coverings
- Viscose is, in principle, an artificial material, but made from natural plant cellulose. In appearance, it is very similar to woolen coverings, but unlike them, it does not accumulate static electricity, which means it does not attract dust masses. Viscose carpet is an anti-allergenic material that does not contain toxic substances, so it can be used for children's rooms. Other positive characteristics include the following:
- aesthetic, rich appearance, the surface of the coating is similar to products made from silk;
— a variety of colors and patterns allows you to choose a coating for any interior style;
— high resistance to ultraviolet radiation helps preserve paints in their original form for a long time;
— the material is pleasant for bare feet;
- products made of viscose with short pile are light in weight;
- quite affordable cost of the material.
To avoid unpleasant consequences, it is necessary to talk about the disadvantages of viscose coatings:
— the slipperiness of the surfaces of viscose carpet means that it must be used on stairs with caution, especially if there are small children in the house;
— the material is flammable, it ignites quickly;
— the long pile of viscose fibers often breaks, which spoils the appearance of the coating;
— a contaminated coating is difficult to clean, so it should not be used in places with high traffic intensity, which usually includes stairs;
- fragility of the material;
— cleaning viscose carpet can only be done using a dry method.
Polypropylene carpet
- Polypropylene flooring can be found in almost every home or apartment, as they are affordable and have a fairly attractive appearance. In terms of quality, they are significantly inferior to natural materials, as well as acrylic coatings.
Polypropylene covering with cut fibers
Propylene fiber is used for both the base of the carpet and its pile. The pile layer is divided according to its structural structure into several types:
— loop (the pile is not cut);
- cut pile of various heights;
- single-level - the entire pile has the same height;
- multi-level - pile of different sizes.
The advantages of this material include the following characteristics:
— low hygroscopicity, so the material can be subjected to wet cleaning;
— resistance to pollution and chemical reagents;
- resistance to ultraviolet rays;
— antistatic qualities;
— ease of care;
- antiallergic qualities;
- affordable price.
Negative factors include low wear resistance and instability to deformation, fragility. And also the fact that polypropylene coating is not a completely environmentally friendly material, although it does not emit toxic substances into the environment, so it will not cause harm to health.
Acrylic carpet
- Acrylic carpets. Most often, a mixture of acrylic and wool is used in the manufacture of this material. Such products differ in their characteristics and, of course, have their advantages and disadvantages.
The advantages of this material are:
— affordable cost;
- color fastness, as it is inert to ultraviolet radiation;
— a wide range of colors and patterns offered;
— hypoallergenic coating;
— good heat and sound insulation;
— resistance to moisture, so you can use wet cleaning to clean it;
- strength and light weight;
- resistance to deformation.
Disadvantages of acrylic carpet:
— if you do not immediately remove stains from paint, dirt or grease from the coating, they will remain forever;
— if the coating is not treated by the manufacturer with special compounds, it will become electrified, and in the event of a fire it will quickly ignite;
- fibers fall out of some acrylic products, which means that there will be additional garbage in the house;
— on short-pile carpet, rubbing it with a brush can cause abrasions and pills to form;
— the original appearance of the material is preserved only for 4–6 years;

- If the steps have slight unevenness, then they can be left. They will become invisible under the coating. But you shouldn’t ignore the uneven edges. Before starting work, this deficiency must be corrected.
- For wooden stairs, you can use a plane to level the edges, after which they are extended using wooden planks. They are secured using screws with countersunk heads. In this case, you need to ensure that the depth of the steps is maintained.
- If the steps are loose, you can nail wedges from below or screw treads to the risers. This will strengthen them.
- To increase the reliability of fastening, you can install carbon slats with horizontal and vertical rows of spikes in the corners of the treads and risers.
- On the sides of the steps along the back and bottom edge of the riser, it is necessary to nail slats with spikes. You can use glue to attach the slats if the base is level. Nails are used for wooden stairs.
