Finding more or less high-quality concrete tiles has become very problematic. And it’s also good if you buy CONCRETE tiles, not CEMENT-SAND tiles!

The situation is somewhat different with the production of polymer sand tiles . The equipment for its production is still not as cheap as for sand-cement. Setting up its production is much more difficult and costly. And it is even more difficult to establish the production of high-quality polymer sand tiles - huge costs are required to modernize production lines and production technology. Not many production facilities in Russia can boast of this.

Of course, as they say, every family has its black sheep, you can stumble upon bad polymer sand tiles, we wrote about this above in the “Beware of fakes” section. This is often caused by the fact that there are no good production lines for sale. A simple line is purchased, the entrepreneur struggles with it for a year or two, selling the results of his production research for pennies to satisfied clients, and successfully closes down. The result of such activity is usually not so satisfied customers, and negative reviews about polymer sand tiles on forums on the Internet.

Technologies for the production of polymer-based boards make it possible to create durable and reliable products that are used in finishing, construction and site decoration. Polymer-sand paving slabs, which have a number of advantages, for example, over concrete products, compare favorably in this regard. The undeniable advantage of this material is that it is resistant to mechanical stress, while having a variety of beautiful variations and bright colors. These tiles combine comfort and quality.

One of the most noticeable characteristics of such tiles is the fact that no cement dust appears when they are laid. Any common types of installation do not lead to damage or cracking, which is due to its plasticity property. There are no difficulties in caring for the products, since they are easily washed with ordinary water without absorbing it, which allows you to not worry about reducing their shelf life.

In shape, these products have different shades and patterns, which not every tile can boast of. Polymer paving slabs, despite their considerable size, have a relatively low weight. But it can be used not only for the sidewalk - it is suitable, for example, for cladding external walls, laying borders or roofing (in the latter case, it is recommended to lay the tiles on a waterproofing layer on top of the supports).

TESTING SITE

Currently, there is a lot of debate about the correct method of laying polymer-sand tiles for paving, terraces, and gardens.

Construction forums on the Internet are replete with reviews from owners who laid tiles themselves, advice from manufacturers who are simply passing by but have their own strong opinions about everything in the world, competitors who give horror to potential buyers or citizens who have already laid tiles.

There is so much information and it is so contradictory that the interested person, instead of clearly understanding the question of what and how to lay polymer sand tiles, becomes completely disoriented.

Usually, the most accurate information is, of course, on the websites of the manufacturers of this tile. It describes the most proven methods of laying and installing polymer sand tiles.

In August 2016 For our clients, we decided to simplify the task of choosing a method for laying polymer-sand tiles and made a test site, where on an old concrete base simulating a platform for a car or a blind area, we demonstrated the most popular and, in our opinion, the most reasonable methods of installing polymer-sand tiles. We used leftover tiles from the warehouse.

We laid the tiles:

- just on the sand, sealing the seams with sand;

- on a sand-cement cushion with a sand-to-cement ratio of 5:1, sealing the joints with sand;

- on a sand-cement cushion with the addition of tile adhesive with a ratio of sand to cement to adhesive of 4:1:1, sealing the seams with sand;

- only for tile adhesive, sealing joints with a special sealant;

- for various industrial adhesives with sealing of seams with a special sealant.

To begin with, we made a frame from a 40x20 profile pipe, simulating a curb. We divided the site into 6 plots of 4 sq.m. for different installation methods.

Filled the gaps between the base and frame

The resulting niches were filled with sand, sand-cement and sand-cement with glue mixtures.

We made leveling ties for adhesive installation methods.

After completing the preparation of the bases, we began laying in various ways.

The methods for installing polymer sand tiles on sand, sand-cement and sand-cement with glue are very similar.

Laying on moistened sand in a layer of 30-40mm:

Laying on a sand-cement cushion 30-40 mm.

Laying on a sand-cement pad with 30-40 mm glue.

Spilling from a watering can. At this stage, be sure to remember to wash off the cement stains. Otherwise, immediately after laying, the tiles will not look very nice, although over time the whiteness from the cement will still go away.

Next, we proceed to laying it with tile adhesive.

Laying with various industrial adhesives and sealing seams using special sealant and masking tape.

Based on the appearance of the resulting site, the simplicity and cost of installation, the commission voted on the method of laying it on sand.

Next, we left all the sites for a month to allow the adhesives to fully polymerize and the concrete to gain strength.

A month later, trial operation began.

Passenger cars, loaded trucks, and forklifts with cargo arrived. There are no comments on any installation method - all methods can withstand loads.

Operation also takes place during the winter. Among other things, there are forklifts whose wheels are equipped with snow chains.

In May 2022, we will study how it will withstand the winter and thaws, after which we will test the platforms for tearing the tiles away from the base.

Masonry technology

Having completed the preparatory work and made sure that the concrete has dried and acquired the required hardness, you can proceed to the main part of the work. If cracks form, the tile will no longer be suitable for use.

Installation of the coating on a concrete pad is simple and accessible. In this case, the blocks can be fixed on sand and crushed stone, or only on sand.

The laying technology involves the use of the “checkerboard” or “herringbone” technique. Due to the minimal weight of polymer products, they can be fixed to the roof or supporting structures with a waterproofing coating.

Installation is carried out in dry weather, and the distance between the blocks is at least 5-7 mm. The base is pre-leveled.

If a large load is placed on the tiles, the cushion must be carefully strengthened and the water drainage system taken care of. If all recommendations and installation rules are followed, the work will be simple, but require attention and responsibility.

Popular sizes, weight and approximate price

Paving slabs come in various sizes. It is produced mainly in regular geometric shapes and in several color options. The height of tiles with a corrugated surface reaches 30 mm or 25 mm, the traditional standard size of an individual element is 300 x 300, 300 x 330, 330 x 330 mm. The weight of 1 square meter is from 3.5 to 4 kg.

The final cost of the polymer sand material includes production costs, energy resources, and the price of the main components. To reduce the cost of the final product, a cheap plasticizer and untreated sand are used. Tiles from a well-known manufacturer with high quality characteristics cost from 3.5 to 5 dollars per 1 square meter. How are tiles made?

Polymer sand tiles were originally developed as a material with a long service life, good strength and frost resistance. The main competitor in this segment was and remains concrete-based paving stones, so we will compare polymer-sand products with them.

Composition of raw materials for the production of paving stones

The raw materials for the production of such paving slabs include three main components:

1. The binder (about 25% of the volume) is crushed polymers. When melted under high temperatures (approximately 250 ° C), they become fluid and combine with the filler.

1. Filler (up to 75%) - medium-fraction sand with grain no more than 3 mm. Before mixing with polymer crumbs, sand must be sifted to remove organic impurities and large granules, which reduce strength. After heat treatment, the sand is firmly sintered with the polymer, forming a stable structure.

Adding pigments allows you to get tiles of different colors

1. Dye - added in small quantities to give the tile the desired shade. The low melting point of plastic allows the use of a wide palette of pigments, so the range of polymer sand tiles is extensive.

In the production of polymer-sand paving slabs, a molten mixture of sand and polymer is molded under a press. As a result, air is almost completely removed from the material: the paving stones are dense and therefore more durable.

Main features of the material

When cold, the polymer does not exhibit any chemical activity and is absolutely harmless to the human body. So much so that even children's baths are made from it. A substance reacts only in two cases: when heated or under the influence of a strong solvent. When producing tiles, a heating method is used. The molten mass of plastic easily mixes with other components and exhibits chemical activity.

The main feature of this material is that for its production, instead of cement, a dry plastic mass is used, which, after mixing with sand, is heated to 180 degrees. Subsequently, the resulting molten substance is cooled and a product of a certain shape is formed from it under a heat press. The polymer firmly connects the grains of sand to each other; this does not even require the addition of water.
